Personally I think it looks great, and well suited - and more importantly, artists wouldn't be expected to make several hundred more pixel perfect portraits :). This must have been (near) the center of discussion since merchants were introduced in RPGs. There really isn't a logical way to explain merchant behavior, or why an item, weapon, and optionally magic merchants appear in each town and the goods get procedurally better.
