Free game graphics

Post by Roots » Wed Oct 04, 2006 7:37 pm

Someone on GameDev pointed us to the following free game graphics: http://lostgarden.com/2006/07/more-free ... phics.html

As you can see, they are pretty damn good and look like they might fit in well with our style. At the least, we could use them and make modifications so that they fit in with our tile system. I usually don't favor taking free art from other projects very much (because I believe that every great game should have its own unique look), but this is one of those times where I think it would be wise for us to do so. :)

Those are really nice. I think you should try to use them, or at least use them as a base for some new tile sets.

I'll second that. Yes, I would support bringing these in, and we can bend any future tilework to match the style/edit these.

Wow. Just wow.

:approve: Those look awesome.

As much as I am in favor of Allacrost having its own look artistically, I believe there are ways we can still stay true to the original intent of our style while integrating already established art, such as the ones presented in the link. As long as there aren't any seems between styles, I think this would be very much worth pursuing.

Yeesh, this website is banned as "Weapons" at work... RPGDX.net is banned as "pornography"!

Can't wait to check out these tiles tonight, though :)

Those tiles are gorgeous but the stinking pencily outlines on the trees, rocks, wood beams, and other stuff make it look unprofessional and un-video-gamish!

Sorry I just have to preserve my artistic ego by bashing others that make better art than me.

Very nice.
His tiles are 40x40 so something will have to be resized.

They're nice, I'll give them that. It's "can they be implemented" that I'm interested in. It's one thing to shape them as well. Can we also get them to work with our present tileset?

For my game, I'm using free content to fill the world tilesets, simple because the free isometric content out there is vast (particularly for sci-fi) and of decent qualty. Getting sprites to look like you want to is something else, and getting them to blend is something else as well. I'd be eager to see what the artists can do with this.

Yes. All we really have is cave, and it doesn't clash. Certainly not the cave walls.

Has anyone started to convert these?

I could probably get the tiles working that make sense for allacrost in a couple weeks.

Here's the first installment. I've shrunk these down to 32x32, as well as modestly enhanced them. The largest change is the darkening of the top surface of the beams. The beams themselves may not look as pretty, but i'm confident that once you fill that room with stuff, it will look right.

They might not be Havarah, but they are interiors. These have a few more tiny edge pieces that i might have preferred, but that's the way it goes. There are also a few moderate tileling issues, but i believe those can be better eliminated after we get a map editor.

Your additions look fantastic! I REALLY like what you've done with the northside wall with the cracks and the darknening. Very nice.

Thanks, but you are crediting me for what i didn't do. These aren't before and afters, but 2 sets, a well-kept and a damaged interior set. The original artist had 2 versions. The changes i've made are equally inflicted on both images i'm displaying.
