Game Sprites:

Postby Safir-Kreuz » Sun Mar 13, 2005 3:29 am

After my wonderful birthday, I set out to work on some new sprites.

I have a new NPC set, a base sprite, and two modular sprites sets.

Please do go and and download IDraw3 if you want to assist the joys of sprite making :D

First of all, Happy birthday!!! :D

Second of all.....

HOLY $HIT those sprites are SOOOOOOO awesome!!!!!

Dear god, how do you do it? And you even designed two brand new sprite designs!!! You are freaking awesome! Seriously, I can't say enough praises right now so let's let the smilie do the praising.

On one minor note, the legs (particularly at the knees) look a little strange for those two sprites. Their legs look very slanted, almost as if as the guy takes a step he's throwing his right leg to the left and left leg to the right. See what I mean kind of? On the sprite models though it looks pretty perfect I think. :D

Anyway I'm going to make these "nudes" (haha) available in the public artwork section in case anyone wants to play around with them. Once again awesome job.

Are you refering to the forward and back walking sprites? Because I think you didn't name them in particular? In any case I do see one flaw right now with the NPC, so I'll go make him look um... slightly more manly than walking like a fashion model lol.

Thanks you for all your positive feedback :)

Good sir, you never cease to amaze me.  Also, I'm so glad we didn't go with a square sprite drawing area.  The height to width ratio makes them look so much nicer.  :approve:

Agreed. At the time I was just happy to have a sprite, and now look how many we have of them. :D

I certaintly like your designs, but I don't think that snow-woman...thing would fit in the prologue. :heh: Nothing wrong with exploring your design space though, because seeing new art helps give me ideas as well.

Also all of the sprite's we've seen so far have been young men/women. What about some old people? Some kids (obviously they'll be smaller). What about Laila's parents (we've got good concept art for them done by Venndetta1). What about the king? I'm not harrassing you or anything, just providing a friendly reminder that we have some specific designs needed for the prologue as well as providing a wide breadth of ages in our sprites. Keep up the awesome work! :approve:

lol :) I certainly don't believe that will be hard at all. I decided for right now,  where I have such a hectic scheduling, that I will do my design work. I'll animate them when the semester gets a bit easier for me.

S-K, could you can provide me with individual PNG frames of the two animated sprites above? I need some NPCs for testing real soon. :D Thanks!

Grabbed the frames, thanks. :) BTW S-K, you forgot to add a transparent background for a couple of your Laila sprites in your FTP directory.

Hey S-K, I need to check a couple things with you. First please refer to this thread:
http://www.allacrost.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=190

1) Did I get those frame orders right in the 2nd post? I'm pretty sure that the up/down frames are right, but not sure about the left/right frames. I think I might have misordered a couple of them :|

2) On your FTP you have your side frames called something like "r_mid, r_midright1, r_midright2, r_right, r_midleft1, r_midleft2, r_left". What is the order those are supposed to be animated in? (ie, how do they correspond to the numbered frames in the link I gave above?)

3) A request: can you please use the following naming convention for your frames from now on? If a sprite's name is bob, then he should have the following frames (the _rX.png frames are optional)

    bob_u1.png
    bob_u2.png
    bob_u3.png
    bob_u4.png
    bob_u5.png

    bob_d1.png
    bob_d2.png
    bob_d3.png
    bob_d4.png
    bob_d5.png

    bob_l1.png
    bob_l2.png
    bob_l3.png
    bob_l4.png
    bob_l5.png
    bob_l6.png
    bob_l7.png

    bob_r1.png
    bob_r2.png
    bob_r3.png
    bob_r4.png
    bob_r5.png
    bob_r6.png
    bob_r7.png

The reason I want to name them like this is because it's easier for me to remember how to animate the frames in the game. I also designed the code so that you can say "LoadSprite("bob")" and it will automatically load all of those frames. :approve:
