Yeah, someone earlier suggested Vanica's portrait appearence.. I am not the most pleased with it. Yet it was actually the fastest one I have done. Took me like only 2 hours... the others... well... 6 hours maybe... (yet that was using higher resz so thats probably why.)

Claudius had an update on his ingame portrait, altered the eyes and fixed the mouth. So make sure you grab it :) Did minor editing to Vanica's portrait, won't revisit until post release.

Claudius Battle Portrait Animation:
Still needs some editing... but I think I am going to let it be for now. Until my skills upgrade.

The frames are in my portrait/bat-portrait:

6 Frames: 100, 75, 50, 25, 10, KO.

The thing under his right eye looks a little wierd. What is it supposed to be.

Otherwise, I like it. Looks really damn nice. Can you break it down frame by frame so we can look at them individually?

Thanks

Some thoughts.

- Love the facial expression in the first frame :approve:

- Why 6 frames? I thought we were going with 5: 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, and 0% health

- Can you make them in 100x100 pixel size please? Right now they are 95x95 and don't fit entirely inside the portrait box :(

- I'm not really sure that I like the progression of the facial expression. :| It gives me the impression of "oww, mommy it hurts" :heh: I was thinking that he could first look more angry as he got damaged in the 75% and 50% frames, and then maybe from the 25% and 0% frames he could start to look like he was "losing hope" and was undergoing sever physical pain. I dunno, lets see what other people have to say about the expression.

- I don't really like how the 25% and 10% frames get darker. :| I think that the only frame that should have a significant change in color should be the 0% frame (the 0% frame is a perfect grayness :approve: ). Remember that these frames will blend in together so once the health falls below 25%, it will become increasingly more gray as it approaches 0%

- Can the eyes be shut in the 0% frame to make it look more like he's really toast?

- Perhaps (just perhaps) his right cheek could use some sort of element starting at either 50% or 75%: either a cut, it could be smeared with dirt/oil/grease, a light (not heavy) bruise, or maybe it could look sweaty? It just looks kind of awkward that that large part of his face reamins unscathed throughout the whole sequence

I know that's a lot of critique :eyespin:, they are more just suggestions and remarks for discussion rather than "it must look like this", so lets see if other people agree or disagree with me on these points. Overall though, it looks totally fantastic  I can't wait to see it in-game.

I'll go ahead a disagree with these points.

I think it looks marvelous as is. I like your ideas behind the facial progressions but it seems overkill with the right cheek. I think it would remain more awkward if Claudius face happened to get a bruise (oil, grease) in the exact same place every time during the course of the fight. (Unless hes fighting oil and grease monsters throughout the entire game) It makes him look even more like a mommas boy if it looks like's got chocolate smeared all over his face. It might be a good idea to be general with the progressions right now. In my opinion, It is clear enough to see that Claudius is dying within the current progressions.

Thanks a lot pal. I will work on some of these things, yet, I believe most of these things are trivial for right now... I think Allacrost has probably the best staff in the music and art departments. I am so proud.

Oh my I am getting really anxious to see the demo!! :D

One other thing: I noticed when doing my battle menu mock-up work today that the portrait had some grey/white pixels on the left and right outer edges. It looked really bad when I put that portait into the battle menu layout, so I removed the offending pixels in that draft. So just please make sure that those weird outlines don't find their way into the latest versions.

I am glad that you are excited; I am excited as well. :D Even though the demo isn't going to be much fun to play because it will be so limited, it will look and sound freaking awesome without a doubt!

I agree with roots on these points.

I agree with rain that roots' suggestion of "additional damage" is a semi-bad idea.

Also - these rock. :approve:

Are these new battle damage frames ready yet? I don't mean to pester, but I'm working in the battle code a lot today and it would be awesome to be able to use them soon. :) Thanks S-K :approve:

If one has no life and all they do all day is draw 24/7 then naturally you'll get somewhere. Also just trying new things with it helps a lot :D. The best thing though that I ever done is just keep looking at better artists' work.

Alright, I guess I have something to do tomorrow. I'll work on the animation a little bit. I hate looking back at my old work... because I want to change everything too much :(

Uh oh :ohnoes: Sorry S-K, but the position of the head in the portrait frames can not make big movements like that. The reason is that they are all blended together. For example when Claudius is at 62.5% health (half way between 75 and 50), portraits 2 and 3 are mixed 50/50, and this is what it ends up looking like in the game.

[img:1024:768]http://www.allacrost.org/staff/user/roots/screenshots/new_portraits_screenshot.jpg[/img]

:uhoh: Could you please make the portraits so that there is either no head movement, or only very little movement (minute positional changes usually blend together okay)? You, or I, or someone should update the Artwork Standards page on the explicitly and clearly state this I think. :)

Also each of those portraits has a very thin (1-2 pixel) white outline covering the entire head. :( It definitely does not look good in the game, so could you remove that for us please?

Overall I like the changes though! He definitely looks like he's getting more and more worn out each frame! :approve: I notice that you didn't mess up his perfectly combed hair at all in the damage frames, unlike your last version. That's a shame, because I liked that little detail. :(

Oh yeah one more thing (I know you want to :bash: me at this point... :heh: ). For the last frame, can you provide us a version that is both darkened and one that has normal lighting like the other 4 portraits? I want to try both in the game and see which looks best. Thanks S-K, the "portrait pains" will be over soon, I promise! :approve:

:bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash: :devil:

:D All better

Sure it's alright :approve:.

The only thing that is aggrevating is that I normally do my own graphic/programming quarks. I didn't necessarily knew the process you were utilizing.

The 6 frame you see is an optional 5th.
