.wav format?

Hi I'm Joe and I'm thinking about helping to make some music, but I have a question.

1. I haven't listened to the songs yet but I saw that they are in .ogg format.  I have never heard of that format.  If I make songs, would it be okay if I made them using a midi keyboard, and then modified them in wave format using an audio editor on my computer?  They would sound very nice, and not with the sound quality of nintendo-ish midis (I use a Yamaha PSR-340 which is pretty good but not extremely good).  I will of course send some music in before I ask for your judgment!

My main questions here are, is .wav format okay to send in?

.wav is used for the sound effects, but not for the music (because .wav files are simply too large). OGG is just like MP3, only it's not MP3 and we avoid all these licensing issues (if we used MP3 in the game, we'd legally have to fork up something like $2000-$3000). You can convert .wav files directly to .ogg, just like you can for .wav to .mp3.

But yeah, going from MIDI->WAV->OGG there will be no problems. :) I look forwarding to hearing some of your music.

Do I need a special program to convert it to .ogg?

You'll need an encoder. You can find a selection for *nix and Windows here. There's also Audacity, which is a nice audio encoder/editor program that I use, and rain uses it now too. :approve:

Oh dude I just got Audacity like last week.  It's what I'm going to use to transfer my midi into wave.  So I might as well make it into .ogg then.  Nice!

.ogg has native vbr.... sexy :)

I make my works into mp3s only so everyone can hear them.  it's no effort for me to make .ogg.

Not that it really matters, but I thought I'd bring that up.

I use soundforge to convert formats.  It works wonderfully, especially since you can set all parameters on a per-sample basis, if need be (like, when programing looping).

You sure

Sometimes, it's a pity you cannot delete people.  The internet still has its flaws, it would seem.
